Amalgamated Transit Union Local 618 and the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council put their support behind Vargas in District 28 State Senate primary
CRANSTON, R.I. — Cranston City Council Vice President Lammis J. Vargas announced today that she has received the endorsement of two additional Rhode Island labor organizations in the Democratic primary for the District 28 State Senate seat. Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 618 and the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council (RILDC) have both given their support to the current Cranston City Council vice president. ATU and RILDC join Teamsters Local 251, Cranston Firefighters IAFF Local 1363, and Rhode Island State Association of Firefighters in their support for Vargas.
“I have fought alongside organized labor for years to protect Rhode Island’s working families,” said Vargas. “I vow to continue to do so in the Senate, and I am honored to have the added support of the ATU and RILDC.”
In a statement on the endorsement, RILDC said, ““The Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council (RILDC) of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), on behalf of its seven local unions and over 10,000 members in Rhode Island, proudly endorses Lammis Vargas for State Senate – District 28. Lammis is an experienced and passionate voice for working families.”
“Since becoming Cranston City Council vice president, she has shown her commitment to making life better for her constituents,” said President Walter Melillo of ATU Local 618. “If elected for State Senate District 28 we believe Lammis will continue to ensure growth and invest in Rhode Island’s future.
Vargas is the party-endorsed candidate in the Democratic primary. Early voting for the September 10 primary is currently ongoing now through September 9.
Over the course of her career, Vargas has served as Senior Policy Advisor to Rhode Island General Treasurer James A. Diossa, as Deputy Secretary of State and Director of Administration for former RI Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea and as Deputy State Treasurer and Director of Unclaimed Property under former Treasurer Seth Magaziner. Vargas is a cancer survivor, daughter of immigrant parents from Colombia, a mother of two, married to a war veteran, and a Rhode Island College graduate. She is running for the District 28 State Senate seat to continue fighting for the quality of life that constituents in Cranston and Providence deserve.
