Teamsters Local 251, Cranston Firefighters IAFF Local 1363, and Rhode Island State Association of Firefighters Endorse Lammis J. Vargas for State Senate
CRANSTON, R.I. — Cranston City Council Vice President Lammis J. Vargas announced today that she has received the endorsement of three key unions in the Democratic primary for the District 28 State Senate seat. Teamsters Local 251, Cranston Firefighters IAFF Local 1363, and the Rhode Island State Association of Firefighters (RISAFF) join over 20 other elected officials and organizations voicing their support for Vargas’ proven track record and experience.
“Rhode Island is a union state, and working families know how important it is to have an advocate in the State Senate,” said Vargas. “My career in public service and experience as a city councilor make me the best candidate in this race to be that advocate—and the teamsters and firefighters know this too. I am absolutely honored to have the endorsement of these unions.”
“For firefighters, our sole mission is to protect the lives and property of our communities we serve. It is so important to us and our families to have elected officials who protect us when we need it,” said Joseph Andriole, president of RISAFF. “Councilwoman Vargas has proven through her hard work and dedication to her community—and the firefighters who protect her community—that she would make an incredible state senator,” added Armand Niquette, president of the Cranston Firefighters IAFF Local 1363.
“Working people and unions keep Rhode Island moving forward, and we need to continue adding strong, pro-worker voices to the ranks of the Senate,” said Teamsters Local 251 Secretary Treasurer Matthew Taibi. “Working families in District 28 would be well represented by Councilwoman Vargas.”
Early voting for the September 10 primary begins on Wednesday, August 21. The deadline for voters to apply for a mail ballot is Tuesday, August 20.
Over the course of her career, Vargas has served as Senior Policy Advisor to Rhode Island General Treasurer James A. Diossa, as Deputy Secretary of State and Director of Administration for former RI Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea and as Deputy State Treasurer and Director of Unclaimed Property under former Treasurer Seth Magaziner. Vargas is a cancer survivor, daughter of immigrant parents from Colombia, a mother of two, married to a war veteran, and a Rhode Island College graduate. She is running for the District 28 State Senate seat to continue fighting for the quality of life that constituents in Cranston and Providence deserve.
